Halloween (a contraction of “All Hallows’ evening”),also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows’ Eve,or All Saints’ Eve is a holiday observed on 31st October the day before the Western Christian feast of All Saints, or All Hallows, and initiates the season of Allhallowtide. In much of Europe and North America, celebration of Halloween is largely nonreligious.
Halloween had its origins in the festival of Samhain (which signifies “summers end”) among the Celts of ancient Britain and Ireland which was celebrated on 31st October – 1st November. A kindred festival was held at the same time of year by the Brittonic Celts, called Calan Gaeaf in Wales, Kalan Gwav in Cornwall and Kalan Goañv in Brittany; a name meaning “first day of winter”.
The Day of the Dead (el Día de los Muertos), is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a brief reunion that includes food, drink and celebration. A blend of Mesoamerican ritual going back some 3,000 years, to the rituals honouring the dead in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, European religion and Spanish culture, the holiday is celebrated each year from 31st October – 2nd November. While 31st October is Halloween, 1st November is “el Dia de los Inocentes,” or the day of the children, and All Saints Day. 2nd November is All Souls Day or the Day of the Dead.
