Daydreaming definition according to Cambridge Dictionary: the activity of thinking about pleasant things that you would like to do or have happen to you, instead of thinking about what is happening now.

A daydreaming is when a person’s attention drifts to a more personal and internal direction.

Daydreaming was long held in disrepute in society and was associated with laziness. In the late 1800s, Sigmund Freud argued that some daydreams with grandiose fantasies are self-gratifying attempts at “wish fulfilment”. In the 1950s, some educational psychologists warned parents not to let their children daydream, for fear that the children may be sucked into “neurosis and even psychosis.”

It’s common to get lost in our thoughts every once in a while. Experts estimate we spend about 47% of our waking hours in a daydream, momentarily distracted from the world around us as we let our mind wander. The impacts of different types of daydreams are not identical. While some are disruptive and deleterious, others may be beneficial in some way If our daydreams are so intense that they interfere with our daily life, however, we may be a maladaptive daydreamer.
